Volkswagen has unveiled an updated Polo GTI that will feature technology and styling from the larger Golf but retain the 204bhp petrol engine.
The GTI will return as the flagship of the Polo lineup, inspired by the design of the eighth generation Golf, extending to a new front end complemented by a new signature light bar and an updated rear end.
Like the previous GTI, the front-wheel-drive Polo will be powered by a Volkswagen turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission; no word yet on a longtime manual transmission option for the Ford Fiesta ST rival. The GTI is capable of accelerating from 0 to 96 km/h in 6.5 seconds.
The GTI gets an updated look with IQ Light LED matrix headlights accompanying a full-width headlight strip as standard. The company says the light bar “creates a stylish connection with Volkswagen ID electric models and with the new generation of successful models such as the Golf, Arteon and Tiguan.
A new bumper design freshens up the rear, and the standard 17-inch alloy wheels have a new design based on that used in the Golf. The Polo GTI also gets dynamic performance for the first time.
In terms of equipment, the GTI is based on the base Polo Life trim, which offers an 8.0-inch central infotainment screen with built-in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The red interior trim seen on the previous model returns to accentuate the hot hatchback.
The company's Discover Pro and Discover Media systems are optional, and the car also gets Volkswagen's new "digital cockpit" instrument cluster used in the Golf and ID 3. Other options include a panoramic sunroof, voice control, wireless charging, and an impressive sound system. , and 18-inch alloy wheels.
Three driving modes are available: Eco, Normal and Sport, with the latter offering an improved exhaust note. The Polo GTI also features a custom performance-focused chassis, lowering the body 15mm over the standard Polo and adding a large anti-roll bar on the car's front axle, stiffer connecting rods at the front, and stiffer axle mounts front and rear.
The Polo also benefits from Volkswagen's driving assistance system for the first time, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, side assist and rear cross traffic alert. Autonomous emergency braking is also standard, as is a driver alert system and automatic post-collision braking.
